Breed Bans
Why Banning Breeds Does Not Work
It implies that only certain breeds of dog can or will bite. All Breeds of dogs have the capacity to bite. However, dogs that have responsible owners, that grow up with correct socialisation, training and temperament, no matter what their breed, will very rarely bite unless home or family are threatened. Understanding the importance of responsible dog ownership is the only way to prevent dog attacks.
It forces those who want "aggressive" dogs to purchase other breeds, and therefore the risk to the public still remains.BSL is only able to punish those of us who do the right thing and register our dogs honestly as the correct breed. Those individuals who raise dangerous dogs will avoid BSL by falsely registering or not registering their dogs, and by moving from one breed to the next as they get banned. Banning breeds is ineffective and punishes the majority for the behaviour of the minority.
It places the blame on Dogs NOT People. The majority of dog aggression has a root cause in human cruelty, neglect, failure to train and socialise. Dog ownership is more then leaving your pet in the backyard with food, water and the occasional pat. Educating people in the importance of training and socialisation, regardless of their breed of choice is essential to reducing dog attacks.
BSL does not focus on cross breeds or Back Yard Breeders who cross breed non pedigree dogs with no regard for heath, temperament or ensuring their dogs go to loving responsible owners.Statistics prove that the vast majority of dog attacks are by cross bred dogs, labelled a particular breed due to appearance. Legislation needs to focus on Banning Back Yard Breeders and the sale of dogs in pet shops rather then banning breeds.
